This past Monday afternoon, I had an opportunity to speak with the artist SaraBeth Kendall about the making of her life-size crochet sculpture, “Minotaur After Man Ray.” Very interesting. Take a listen.

Steve:
Nice interview with Artist Sara Kendall. Her crocheted art sculpture, titled: “Minotaur After Man Ray.” is such an interesting interpretation of Man Ray’s photos and by inference the posing of Elizabeth Short’s body after her murder by GHH in the ‘minotaur pose’. From the photos I originally saw of SaraBeth’s art piece one could tell that the sculpture was three-dimensional, but it had no physical size dimension. So to hear SaraBeth say that she crocheted the life-size’ figure on her own body, starting at the toes, certainly added to the viewer’s perception of her work (in photographic media). It is a bold expression of her intent to show or display the image of the severed body of Elizabeth Short (The Black Dahlia) in a non-sensationalist manner. I think she accomplished her intent. All the while leading back to, or echoing, it’s inspiration. rjs

Agreed, and thanks. I, too, was surprised that her project was “life-sized.”
