The Noirest of the Noir: Actress Carol Foreman Makes Dahlia Murder Calendar For January 1947 and Becomes Post Murder Tenant at Dahlia Hodel Murder House
In 1948 or 49, actor Tim Holt was courting/dating Carol Foreman who was living/renting a room at our home. My younger brother Kelvin, who would have been six or seven years old, had a crush on Carol and was jealous everytime Tim Holt came over to see her and take her out “on the town.” Holt knew this and one summer day they decided to have it out, mano a mano. Tim and Kelvin met in the center courtyard and Tim came up with a plan. He said, “Kelvin, you’re too young to have Carol as your girlfriend, so here’s the deal. I will date her now, then when you are older, I will get on my horse and ride off into the sunset and you can marry her. Deal?” Kelvin thought for a long moment and finally said, “Deal.” And so it was settled without either man having to slap leather.

The other “Miss January.” Interesting that GHH started advertising for roomers in the LA Times less than two months after the murder,. Was he looking for protective coloration? Or perhaps he was worried about what he got up to when he got “lonely?” -LW

If you search on “OL-3476” (the number cited in the Dahlia surveillance transcripts) during the period GHH was in the Sowden House, it turns up a number of ads in the LA Times, Mirror, Citizen News, and in the (Black community-oriented) California Eagle. Most relate to rooms for rent, but there are also ads advertising a Packard car and various household items, recruiting a nurse, and promoting an artistic dance performance. In August 2007, he offered a reward for a “lost” jade bracelet with a Chinese inscription — reminiscent of, but distinct from, his report to the police of a stolen Chinese “sacrificial tablet” in November of that year. Given the insurance fraud convo in the Dahlia transcripts, perhaps the latter was to buttress a bogus insurance claim? -LW
