Reader Discovers New “G.H.” Posing Clew-In The Mesquite Murders of Nancy and Hazel Frome

July 1, 2023
Birch Bay, Washington
Greetings and as my brother Mike Hodel always used to say about this time of year, “Remember- To be safe on the 4th don’t have a 5th on the 3rd.”  (Miss you big time Mike.)

Today’s “new clew” comes from a reader who mentioned it in a comment on my blog section:
“I just read the book and have been reading through comments on the blog but I haven’t seen this anywhere: am I the only one who sees the letters “G” and “H” in the positioning of the victims’ arms?”

Do you see it? Let’s take a closer look.

Strong potential for DNA link if evidence still exists.   Victim’s likely chloroformed using a handkerchief. Surgical gloves were found near bodies along with a partially smoked cigar. (Victim Nancy Frome’s hands/knuckles burned with the cigar.  Pieces of black hair found clutched in Nancy Frome’s hand should also result in DNA link to suspect.

It is highly unlikely that surrealist artist and close friend of Man Ray and George Hodel knew about GHH’s connection to the 1937 double homicide of Hazel and Nancy Frome when decades later he apparently provided his own version of a “G.H.” clew, to supplement his earlier “It’s Midnight Dr. ____” clews to the Black Dahlia murder where he actually spelled out the name HODEL. In this later version, we see Copley laying supine in the “Minotaur Position” in probable imitation of the Elizabeth Short crime scene and he uses the two “Alphabet for Adult” letters “G.H.” as an additional later clew to whodunit.
Surrealist friend of Man Ray and George Hodel’s. A “G.H.” Hat Trick?

Steve, as stated before, I can relate to your book “In the Mesquite” from incidents occurring on a similar trip with my mom circa 59 or 60😱! If the DNA from the Frome murders is still available & nothing tested then it is crime heaped upon crime😞. Thankful every day I & my progeny safe & leading productive lives, but every day is a challenge. Sadly there is no guarantee for any of us that tomorrow awaits. Be safe, healthy👍! 😎🌵

Hi Patricia. The Texas Rangers seem to be “MIA” on this like most/all of the other LE agencies/departments. Guess we will just have to be satisfied that the public has the information and assume it’s all disappeared through the decades. Have publicly published GHH’s DNA so that’s about all I can do at this stage.. Happy 4th of July to you and yours. Steve

Steve, as the 4th upon us, I become so aware of msgs, greetings from family traveling all over the country & continue saying “stay safe”! Us & oldest son Joe (57) & wife Amy went for a quiet luncheon yesterday at a new winery down the country road from us and we realized all we discussed was kids, grandkids travels, their jobs and their safety, health etc. …….”And That’s the Way
it Goes🎼“. I know in the past I had talked to you about your father’s deeds and the tragedies I witnessed in SFPD falling into the genre of Jack the Ripper or Harry Callaghan! Well, think we can now truthfully say…….”And That’s the Way It Goes 🎼”.
        Happy & Safe 4th, Steve!🤗🎆🎇

Hi Luigi. All is good up here in the NW corner of the U.S.
Took an overnight to DT Vancouver B.C. with my No. 1 Son Michael for Father’s Day.
Beautiful city just 45 minutes from my home in Birch Bay which is 6 miles south of the border.
Have a fun 4th of July. Best, Steve
