This is the city. Los Angeles, California. Population four million.
It was a brisk Holloween Eve and I was working the night watch out of my home office when the Email message came in.  It was from a citizen. He wanted to help.  Here is his story.

The Backstory

The below Raul Moreno interview was conducted and published in Black Dahlia Avenger in the AFTERMATH chapter included in the updated paperback edition in 2004.

JTD’s Story- A 2019 Confirmation/Corroboration

“JTD” is a highly educated man (BS and MA)- and his identity is known to me but for the purpose of this blog, I will keep his name private. The conversation between his father and JTD took place in 1975 (approximate year) while he was attending college.  JTD further informed me that the conversation between Jack Webb and his father he believes occurred in 1960, as his father left Cadillac Company in 1963.  (Coincidentally, I joined LAPD that same year.)
Here is JTD’s email:

JTD’s recall of his father’s description of both the suspect and the residence once again, independently confirm that LAPD and the DA investigations “had their man” back then.
Everything the father told his son in 1975 matches and corroborates exactly with what Jack Webb told his friend and fellow actor, Raul Moreno, in 1982.
Thank you JTD for forwarding the information and sharing it with myself and other readers.  Much appreciated.
Have to wonder who else Sgt. Joe “Just The Facts” Friday told?
A secret like that would be hard to keep. Especially, decades after the crime occurred and knowing or believing that the killer was “long gone” and outside the country.

Your site keeps amazing me. Steve, I don’t know if your father’s remains were destroyed or preserved in any manner, but I am wondering if you can ever find any definitive DNA that is proven to belong to your father. The idea is to have a definitive reference sample and profile to be compared in case DNA evidence from Dahlia, Zodiac, or the other criminals DNA are ever examined further. Sending them the detailed DNA workup and results from your father’s DNA would would at least put the proverbial stake out in the sand and half of the equation would be readily there to compare against. You might get mitochondrial DNA results on yourself and all known relatives as well, in the even the existing DNA in any evidence was degraded. If they could not rule out your father, it speaks volumes to the truth of your conclusions.

      J. Morinaga:
Yes, I have my father’s full DNA profile for comparison. I have been attempting to get LE agencies to conduct/obtain both LAPD and SF Zodiac cases but no one is willing to test for DNA. No confirmed Zodiac DNA exists. I have approached LAPD multiple times to conduct comparisons. Their only response, “We are too busy with other unsolved cases.” And so it goes. But, all the evidence now presented takes us way beyond any “reasonable doubt.” Maybe someday they will agree to test their evidence, but? Regards, Steve

        Is a petition possible?

I doubt it. Working on putting a Documentary together. That might help?

Yes Steve you need embarrass the hell out of LAPD and then they might get off their butts in order to save face.

Steve, like a dog w/a bone, don’t let it go! IMHO your investigations include numerous police depts. throughout CA……so much more than the LAPD is involved from The Black Dahlia, Lone Woman Murders to Zodiac!! The refusal of so many PD’s to arrest your father in CA unleashed further murders nationally & internationally!. A real travesty of justice that must one day be fully exposed. And when it is exposed it will not be pretty for CA, LA, SF et al😔. Keep on pushin’, Steve👍

        • Steve Hodel on November 1, 2019 at 5:36 pm

Patricia O: Thanks, Patricia. Not about to stop now. Six books and counting. I think the real exposure will come when and if the miniseries documentary is made. So visual and will reach a much larger audience. And yes, for sure LAPD has blood on their hands by not taking action which resulted in as you say, Manila and Riverside and SF Bay area crimes to following in the Sixties.
I can’t help but think when LAPD powers-that-be saw (those few brass that were in the know from 1947-50) and heard of the SF Zodiac crimes and identical MO from their earlier Lone Woman Murders, must have been worried. All the more reason to keep a lid on what THEY KNEW. Can you imagine the response from the public should it be revealed that they had him and let him go and it resulted in the later crimes. Not going to happen of their watch. (Or, apparently on any LAPD future watches either.)
          Best, Steve

    Hi Steve,
I just ordered one of your books and look forward to reading it over the weekend. I’ve been checking out your website and blog.
I see that your dad worked in government and held a fairly high position in the UN as Chief Regional Medical Officer in Asia. He was also an international businessman with his market research company.
There have always been mysterious and shadowy characters involved with the UN and international trade.
Have you ever thought about or investigated any potential “new world order” or shadow government type connections to your father as a potential source of his money and/or protection?

    • Steve Hodel on November 1, 2019 at 5:39 pm

Feather: Hi Feather. Certainly possible as his UNRRA and later INRA connections would be a perfect placing for working with the CIA and ??? Never checked anything like that. Kind of beyond my paygrade and expertise. Besides, I’m still stuck in the CA “Early Years” crimes which are massive. So little time, so many murders. Best, Steve.

    Here’s an oddity, Steve:
    A long-forgotten 1947 PRC murder mystery, “Heartaches” from 1947.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S64CkQUryMc

Take a look beginning at around 13:38 in.
Is this the first movie reference to the Dahlia killing?

    • Steve Hodel on November 2, 2019 at 11:12 am

Bill S: Thanks Bill it is had no clue this existed. Thanks, I’ll blog it for readers to see. Much appreciated. And YES, this would be the first big-screen film mention of the crime that I am aware of.
IMDB showed the film was released on June 28 1947, so that would be just five months after the murder. Steve

WOW. GHH was really a high priest in satanic Hollywood wasn’t he? He lauded in movie after movie by them. Unbelievable.

Where did that come from? Care to chime in Steve?

  4. Dick Bonneau on November 12, 2019 at 9:30 am

Hi Steve: Don’r know if you remember me or not. You came to our Rotary Club to speak about your first book (BDA.) in about 1998. I see you are still working diligently on case closure. True detective spirit! I look forward to the TV series.

    • Steve Hodel on November 12, 2019 at 10:23 am

      Dick B.
Hi Dick. Must have been closer to 2003-4 as the book didn’t publish until April, 2003.
Yes, six books later and still at it. I hope the miniseries documentary happens as it will bring it all together visually for the public. Wishing you and yours the best.
