Jay "Hiccup" Baruchel Takes Time Out Between Dragon Trainings to Read A Few Good Books

“I just finished a book called Most Evil, which is written by this guy Steve Hodel, he used to be a homicide detective in L.A. and he’s convinced his dad was the Black Dahlia Avenger and then researching that led him to believe that his dad also ended up being the Zodiac killer as well. I don’t know whether or not I agree, but the book was absolutely fascinating.”

Above is an excerpt from his interview of 3.26.2010, by Amanda Mae Meyncke.  (Jay, seen below as Hiccup Horrendous, astride his dragon, stars in the just released Dreamworks animated film, How to Train Your Dragons. The film is now showing in IMAX 3D.

AM: What sort of books do you like to read?

JB: I’ve been reading this book called The Mammoth Book of Jack the Ripper. That book is amazing, since it’s a compilation of every witness statement, police document, newspaper clippings, everything from that era. They go murder by murder, they have all the transcripts of the autopsies, and the second half is the five most reputable Ripper-ologists, their big theories. And so if you’re interested in that world at all, it’s a great tour guide to that era. I just finished a book called Most Evil, which is written by this guy Steve Hodel, he used to be a homicide detective in L.A. and he’s convinced his dad was the Black Dahlia Avenger, and then researching that led him to believe that his dad also ended up being the Zodiac killer as well. I don’t know whether or not I agree, but the book was absolutely fascinating. Before that I was reading a book called Understanding the F-Word: American Fascism and the Politics of Illusion. But for fiction, I’m a huge Stephen King fan, everything he’s written. He’s kind of the best, to me, and his Dark Tower series is spectacular.
