Rima Hodel Takes Detective I Exam at Sehome High School Auditorium: Test Results to Follow
December 26, 2023
Birch Bay, Washington
As we close out 2023 I wanted to update readers who have been querying me on “When was Rima scheduled to take the Detective I exam?”
I dropped her off YESTERDAY, December 26, 2023, at the gymnasium at Sehome High School, in Bellingham (a city 15 miles south of our home in Birch Bay) where she along with an estimated seventy-five other candidates took the exam. From pencils up to pencils down, it lasted four hours.
(I had to smile when I learned the location of Rima’s test, as my Detective I exam with LAPD was the first ever given and was taken in the gymnasium of Hollywood High School in if memory serves me correctly was way back in 1971.)
Rima barked out her concern that she may not have passed it as in her words “it was way more difficult than expected.”
So now the waiting begins. (Officials indicated the results would be sent via mail in “several weeks.”)
PERFECT TIMING!
A big surprise awaited us when we got home last night. A longtime friend and supporter, Patricia O’Neill, sent us the below photo which read:
Happy New Year, Steve! Just finished “Rima” and will mail to you in few days when varnish has completely dried. The canvas is 12” x 12”. Hope your Christmas was a good one! Ours was busy here in, nice to relax now. Will let you know when mailed with an expected delivery date! Stay well and here’s to a happy & healthy 2024!
“Rima”
Big hugs and thanks to Patricia. Rima LOVES IT.
I think novel character John Watson had a thoughtful dog called Gladstone.
Thank you Steve & Rima🫶🏻! Just packed up Rima’s portrait for mailing tomorrow, Steve! Wishing you good luck on test results, Rima👌. .Are you ready for the roller coaster life awaiting you?! Yes, the memories of family members working their ways up the police ladder, the Policemens’ Ball, the good humor & the bad humor at family bars, restaurants, St. Patrick’s Day, and the many tearful police funerals that left families with never to be forgotten memories and emotions❤️🩹! May the 👮♂️Force be with you always 🤝!!
Patricia O:
Thanks again for the super painting of her.
She’s been kind of “down” the last twenty-four hours. She thinks she didn’t study hard enough and doubts she passed the exam. She says she struggled with a lot of the forensic questions and some of the math. We will see. She can take it again in a year if necessary.
Steve!

I knew it. It’s in her DNA. And why not. She had one of the best teachers around to help her study. Congratulations, Rima. 🎊 I’m toasting your top five in your class finish with a cup-O- Joe. I know your proud of your new partner, Steve. Here’s to the best for you both in the coming new year. Celebrate 🎉

Thanks. Yes, she was thinking she blew it on the forensics questions, but obviously NOT SO.
Very proud of her and excited to get her out on the not-so-mean streets up here and let her lose.
Best, Steve
