Scary stats on CA, Steve! Feel lucky to have grown up there, but who knew who we were running into on the beaches, bars, apartment living etc.!! Glad to hear Zodiac taking a prime position in your upcoming series! Oh, I bet there will be some people quite uncomfortable when your series comes out.! Forge on……can’t wait to see who plays GHH😱!!

Yes, excited to get moving on the project. Some real talent involved in the making of it so it should be something really special. Not just another documentary but hopefully will go where none have gone before. The “material” demands something unique to say the least.

Great to see you’re still going at it. Here’s something I’ve always wanted to ask you about. IMO, it’s crazy to think how many lines of similarity there are between GHH’s crimes (both Dahlia and Zodiac) and the Monster of Florence case that happened a few years later. (Or even partly at the same time, depending on how you date it). How much do you know about that case? I’d highly encourage you to take a look, if you have the time. You’ll see what I mean.
Obviously, it’s doubtful that GHH was involved with the Florence series, and some great work has been done to develop a likely theory of who may have been responsible for it. But so much is similar, I wonder if it’s possible the Monster’s crimes were consciously inspired by your father’s. I think it’s possible the Monster knew about Zodiac, Dahlia, and the link between them, and wanted to make his own version that combined elements of both. More than that, I really wonder if the Monster actually “got” the whole Dadaist murder-as-art angle to GHH’s crimes decades before anyone else noticed it and pointed it out to the wider world. Because I see echoes of that motif in those crimes also.
You’ve written convincingly about the loose group of people within that particular artist subculture who likely knew what your dad had done, and why. They let us know they knew without letting on about just what it was they knew. And they didn’t seem to disapprove. Was that group still going in some form all the way into the 70s and 80s, perhaps with other people whom the story of George Hodel was passed down to? Could tell of it have spawned a second series of eerily similar crimes on another continent? I mean, Florence is everything Dadaism was a reaction against, and Dadaism is subversive above all.
Or maybe sickos just think alike and this is all coincidence. No idea.

Have not really looked at TMOF though GHH did travel regularly to Europe during his INTRAMAR years conducting international airline/hotel surveys. My gut feeling is that the 1969 Paul Stine “Zodiac” murder was likely his last, but I could be wrong about that. His health began to weaken and I don’t see him committing crimes in the 80s? GHH could well have been the Monster’s “inspiration” as Dahlia and Zodiac, much like Jack the Ripper was GHH’s inspiration in many crimes. Stay tuned will be begin working on a miniseries adapting my books to tv and then will publish “The Early Years” my father’s suspected crimes from the Twenties and Thirties. Lot more to come.

Suffice to say I’m fascinated to see how the mini series comes together, there’s so many compelling visual elements involved I’m sure it will be great. Having just read Most Evil 2 and the John Walsh Scorpion letters section I was wondering whether you’d contacted him in the past about collecting DNA evidence from the letters? I hadn’t seen it discussed before. I was just thinking it might help to lean on authorities with regard to testing of other potential sources of zodiac DNA. Is DNA testing going to have a role in the mini series? I’m sure you’ve been asked all these questions before but I’m only a little way down the rabbit hole. All the best from across the pond!

Yes, mega visuals for sure. I’m hoping that we can try and get some DNA comparisons done, but still to be determined. So far, law enforcement has been nonresponsive to my requests to meet and discuss, but maybe that will change? Maybe the “production people” will have better luck with the challenge? Best, Steve
